Small Disasters arrives in our country through HBO Max with a fresh proposition that will delight fans of British productions. Paramount+’s original series proved to be a hit in the United Kingdom last spring, delivering strong audience figures and favorable reviews that position it as one of the the most interesting premieres in Great Britain in 2025.

The series is created by Ruth Fowler (Rules of the Game), who produces and writes alongside Amanda Duke (Betrayal) to shape a script that adapts Sara Vaughan’s well-known novel. At the helm of directing we have Eva Sigurdardottir (Breakups), who directs all six episodes by herself.

Joining Diane Kruger, the lead of the production, are Jo Joyner (Doctor Who), Shelley Conn (Gen V) and Emily Taaffe (Other People’s House), as the four mothers who make up this colorful group of friends. Doc Brown (Fleabag), JJ Feild (The Peripheral), Stephen Campbell Moore (Lords of the Air) and Patrick Baladi (Now and Forever) complete the cast.

What Small Disasters Is About

The series introduces us to Jess (Diane Kruger), Liz (Jo Joyner), Mel (Emily Taaffe) and Charlotte (Shelley Conn), four first-time mothers who meet in a childbirth preparation class and, despite having nothing in common, end up bonding and developing a solid friendship over an entire decade.

A relationship that can go awry when, ten years later, Jess appears in the emergency room with her baby, who has an injury that her mother is unable to explain. Liz, who works at that hospital, is forced to call social services, triggering a domino effect that will jeopardize the lives of these four friends.

Liz (Jo Joyner) will be forced to make a decision that could jeopardize the stability of her group of friends.

This call acts as the trigger for a mysterious plot that becomes more and more tangled as we learn the secrets of this group of mothers, while the series tackles complex themes such as guilt, the social expectations surrounding motherhood, and raising children in an environment that does not allow weakness.

Based on a Best-Selling Novel

In recent years, many novels have been adapted for a series format, this being a great resource that streaming platforms rely on to offer interesting and well-known content, for the most part, to their viewers. The Girlfriend, All This I Will Give You, or Memento Mori are just a few examples of a phenomenon that writes a new chapter with Small Disasters.

The book, which gained some notoriety in the United Kingdom and successfully spread to other markets, is written by Sara Vaughan, the renowned author of Anatomy of a Scandal. The novel enjoyed worldwide recognition and also found its place in Netflix’s lineup, with a production starring Sienna Miller and that enjoyed a good run on the Netflix platform.

Jess (Diane Kruger) faces a tricky situation and public scorn from her closest circles.

The same level of success Small Disasters aims to achieve, the new HBO Max series. Starring Diane Kruger, the drama promises to deliver strong emotions in a tale that blends motherhood with a major mystery at the heart of a group of friends harboring many secrets and lies.
