Sun protection has become one of the fundamental pillars of skincare, but not all textures work the same in day-to-day life. In a context where we seek lighter, more effective routines that are compatible with makeup, sun protectors with a fluid or lightweight finish have gained prominence, especially in urban environments or warm climates.
Beyond comfort, choosing a sunscreen wisely and using it correctly makes a difference not only aesthetically, but also in skin health. From preventing premature aging to protection against spots or deeper damage, proper use remains one of the most persistent recommendations within dermatology.
Characteristics of lightweight sunscreens
When choosing a lightweight-textured sunscreen, the key is to find a balance between efficacy and sensoriality. «To be light, a sunscreen usually combines high-efficiency filters with low oil load and a watery or volatile base that allows rapid evaporation and a non-occlusive finish», explains Raquel González, cosmetologist and founder of Byoode.
Beyond texture, the basic requirements do not change. Dr. Cristina García Millán, expert in sensitive skin and aesthetic dermatology and medical director of Esthea Médica clinic in Madrid, recalls that «a lightweight sunscreen must maintain the same efficacy criteria as any good sun protector: broad spectrum against UVA and UVB, SPF 30 as a minimum and, if used outdoors, water resistance». She also emphasizes that the SPF chosen does matter: «SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB radiation and SPF 50 around 98%». Although the difference may seem small, that margin is relevant in high-exposure conditions, so in summer or in situations such as the beach or the mountains SPF 50 is non-negotiable.
Proper SPF Application
One of the most critical points in the efficacy of any sunscreen is application. «Sunscreens should always be
Regarding the amount, she proposes a simple reference: «the rule of applying a strand of SPF along the index and middle fingers is a standard measure that tends to work well». In the same vein, Dr. García Millán insists that «on the face you must be generous», as an insufficient application significantly reduces actual protection. It is also important to respect the order in the routine. «It should be applied as the last step of skincare and before makeup, ideally about 15 minutes before sun exposure», she adds.
Sunscreen Reapplication
One of the major challenges in daily use of sunscreen is making it compatible with makeup. In these cases, there are strategies to maintain protection without altering the finish. «If we are wearing makeup, I recommend applying it with the help of a makeup sponge with light taps so as not to ruin the finish», advises Mireia Fernández. Another option is to use lightweight bases with protection: «reapplying liquid foundation in a serum format with protection helps to replenish the shield and keep the face perfect».
For her part, Dr. García Millán proposes not to frame it as a choice between one or the other: «first the sunscreen, well applied, and then the makeup». In cases of blemishes or melasma, she further recommends tinted sunscreens, since «some formulas with iron oxides add protection against visible light».
