Now that we are well into the routine, the desire to organize express getaways not too far from home to disconnect for a few days and recharge again resurfaces—and strongly. Taking advantage of autumn gradually becoming more present in the drop in temperatures and in landscapes painted in the colors typical of the season, there is nothing like scouting a rural destination where the charm of this especially special time of year can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Rest, tranquility, and a privileged setting are what this hidden corner in the province of Huesca offers us, placing it among the most beautiful destinations for an autumn getaway. Although it is a small village, its beauty and unique charm are attributed to multiple factors, ranging from the natural landscape in which it is framed to the heritage wealth hidden among the mountains.

In the heart of the Hoya region we find Agüero, a beautiful town in Huesca located opposite the famous mallos that bear the name of the locality and that frame the town between vertical rocks. The panorama of Agüero is stunning from the moment you approach the region along a road that winds through lush forests that lead to this town sheltered by this geological formation that is a true spectacle of nature.

If what surrounds Agüero already more than justifies a visit, what it holds inside does not fall short. For Agüero is not only the dream destination for nature lovers who want to enjoy the visual delight of seeing autumn adorn such a privileged setting, it also proves to be a dream place for art lovers, since in Agüero there are heritage jewels that recall the region’s medieval past and that are of incalculable value.

Why you should visit Agüero

As we have hinted, simply approaching Agüero along its winding roads is enough to understand why this town is one of the privileged destinations to travel within Spain this autumn. But it gets even better once you delve into it. One of the main reasons is its wealth in Romanesque heritage. Marked by a medieval heritage, this town preserves true heritage treasures from that era that are worth visiting.

One of its best examples is the Parish Church of San Salvador, a work dating from the twelfth century and attributed to the Master of Agüero, which sits among the most important Romanesque works in the region. This church, located in the town center, stands out for its imposing flared doorway and for the blend of elements of Romanesque with others from Gothic or Renaissance that result in an architectural work of great artistic and historical value.

Outside the town lies another of Agüero’s most curious enclaves. Its Abbey House houses the Museum of the Historic Organ, a unique place in Spain founded in 1983 that preserves the history of this instrument and houses pieces dating back to the 16th century. Along with the organ, the bells of Agüero also play a leading role in its tradition. They consist of two small bells and two large ones around which an entire language of tolls, cadences, and echoes has developed, forming part of the region’s intangible heritage.

Agüero is also an ideal destination for climbing and birdwatching enthusiasts, who find their shared interest in the Mallos of Agüero. This geological artwork is not only a challenge worth taking on if you enjoy climbing, as it offers optimal conditions for practicing the sport, but it is also the home to birds such as the peregrine falcon or the griffon vulture, which is not at all difficult to spot from here.
