Here’s How I Choose a Full-Coverage Foundation Without a Heavy Look

I think I’m not the only one who, as the temperatures drop, feels like revisiting a foundation with a bit more coverage. The tan is fading, the skin tone can look less uniform and small redness or blemishes that during the summer passed quite unnoticed become more evident again. That said, seeking more coverage does not necessarily mean resorting to a dense formula or an excessively matte finish.

High coverage is also not synonymous with a matte finish. More and more luminosous, satin or natural-matte foundations are available capable of covering quite a bit while keeping a fine and comfortable texture. Some also incorporate hydrating ingredients, something that can be especially interesting when the skin starts to feel different with the change of season. The key is to choose the finish by also considering our skin type and not solely how much we want to cover.

Another step that changes the result a lot is not applying the same amount of foundation across the entire face. I prefer to start with a thin layer and increase coverage only where blemishes, redness or small imperfections are still visible. This way I take advantage of the formula’s covering power without completely hiding the skin’s natural texture nor ending up with that feeling of wearing too much makeup.

In the end, coverage is only part of the equation. Skin that begins to feel drier can appreciate a luminous or comfortable formula, while if shine continues to predominate, a matte finish may make more sense. And perhaps that is the change worth bringing to the makeup bag this season: not looking for the foundation that covers the most, but the one that can do so without it looking like we’re wearing more makeup.

Dior Forever Skin Glow by Dior.

Dior Forever Skin Glow by Dior combines high coverage with a luminous finish, something especially interesting for those who don’t want a concealing foundation to leave the skin matte or flat. Its ultra-fine texture blends with the face to even out the tone and maintain a natural finish for hours. It also contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides.

True To Myself by Rare Beauty.

True To Myself by Rare Beauty offers a modulable medium-to-high coverage with a natural satin-matte finish that keeps the skin comfortable. Its creamy and light texture is designed to blur imperfections and pores without piling up easily in lines. It also incorporates sodium hyaluronate, ginger root and algae extract, and provides up to eight hours of hydration.

Double Wear by Estée Lauder.

Double Wear by Estée Lauder remains a reference when we look for coverage and longevity, but its new formula allows modulating the result from light to full. It includes hyaluronic acid, glycerin and niacinamide to balance hydration and shine control. It is also designed to resist water, heat and humidity without clumping or settling into lines.

Born This Way by Too Faced.

Born This Way by Too Faced bets on medium-high coverage with a finish that is much more natural than traditional concealing foundations. Its formula provides hydration and setting for 24 hours and is designed to resist water, sweat, humidity and transfers. A good choice if we want to cover imperfections without losing the look of real skin.

Best Skin Ever by Sephora Collection.

Best Skin Ever by Sephora Collection allows you to scale coverage from medium to high while maintaining a satin and natural finish. Its fluid texture includes hyaluronic acid and is designed to stay comfortable for hours without a drying feeling. It also resists water and transfers, so it works well when you want more coverage without resorting to particularly dense formulas.

Infalible Fresh Wear Cushion by L’Oréal Paris.

Infalible Fresh Wear Cushion by L’Oréal Paris, brings coverage to a cushion format much more practical for day-to-day. Its breathable formula aims to even out the skin while maintaining a light feel and a natural finish. It is designed to keep makeup fresh and uniform for up to 24 hours, without that heavy look we usually associate with a very concealing foundation.
