Millie Bobby Brown and her husband, Jake Bongiovi, have just expanded the family with a second baby. As with their first daughter, the couple has also turned to adoption. A decision that arrives amid Hollywood controversy over the ongoing surrogacy cases involving Lena Dunham and Lady Gaga, due to the opposing ways they have managed their recent maternities. Both artists, considered feminist icons, have sparked parallel debates about the boundaries of privacy and ethics.

The Stranger Things star, 22, and her 24-year-old husband shared the good news on social media with a sweet photo showing them holding their newborn’s hands. In the caption, the couple wrote: «Hello, little one!», which seems to confirm the baby’s gender. The couple already are parents of an adopted daughter, welcomed in August 2025. “We are more than excited to embark on this beautiful new chapter of parenthood, both in peace and in privacy,” they wrote in a joint statement at that time.

Fans began speculating last week that Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi had expanded their family after the actress posted a gallery of photos and videos in which her younger daughter could be seen for the first time. In the first video, she holds her daughter in her arms, while Bongiovi wears a baby carrier. From the outset, both have decided to keep their daughter away from the spotlight: they have not revealed her name and have not shown her face yet.

“For me, it is very important to protect her and her story until she is old enough to, perhaps someday, share it herself,” the actress said in an interview last year. “It is not up to me to deliberately put her in the spotlight against her will. If one day she decides to share her personality with the world, as I did when I was young, that is something we would support.”

Lena Dunham, the other side

The creator of the series Girls announced last Wednesday, through an article published in Vogue, that she and her husband, Luis Felber, had become parents of a daughter thanks to a surrogate mother. Lena Dunham has not revealed when exactly her daughter was born, nor has she shared her name. In the article she recounted the whole process and gave details about, for example, how she became obsessed with baby clothes during the last nine months.

“I could not define exactly what I wanted, but I knew it as soon as I saw it: clothes that were fun, but not too precious,” wrote the actress and writer. “And, above all, I was looking for garments that would allow her personality to develop and express itself, instead of announcing an identity she did not yet have.”

Next, Dunham revealed some details about the birth of her daughter, which occurred almost two weeks after the expected date. “I saw her face, panting. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, caught the light and the shadow, blinking rapidly,” Dunham wrote, and she added that she told the little one: “I am your mom. You… don’t resemble in any way what I imagined, but you are exactly how you should be. We have been waiting for you for a long time, you know? It has been a special moment for you to come.”

But the moment that has caused the greatest controversy was when she admitted feeling relief that the surrogate did not excite jealousy in her for “doing for my daughter what I could not.” There have been numerous voices from social media describing Lena Dunham’s account as “dehumanizing” and characteristic of a dystopia like The Handmaid’s Tale.

Lady Gaga, also criticized

Both news items arrive shortly after another feminist icon of contemporary times, Lady Gaga, also became a mother. She and her fiancé, Michael Polansky, turned to surrogacy to become parents of their first daughter, TMZ reported. The little girl was born last June 9 in Los Angeles, though the couple has kept nearly all details of her birth secret for months. It has not been public who the surrogate was, and no further details about the process are known.

Lady Gaga has never hidden her desire to start a family. In 2013, the singer publicly expressed for the first time her dream of having at least three children. And in an October 2025 interview on The Late Show, the artist told host Stephen Colbert: “What I really want is to be a mother. That is my next leading role, I hope.”
