Pop superstar Aitana has addressed several controversies she has been involved in over the past few months. She did so in a cover interview for GQ magazine, where she spoke openly about the accusations she faced in the past regarding housing speculation or about where her tax residency is located.
Aitana, who is currently in Mexico as part of her Latin America leg of the Cuarto Azul World Tour, has confessed how her relationship with her partner, Plex, began, and even hinted at what she hopes their next step together will be: «I want to get married and have children. At 27, I’ve already lived many things, both myself and my partner, who has also circled the globe three times. But I still see us as young and I would like to become a young mother. Not now, but I have to schedule it in my calendar«.
But undoubtedly, it was her remarks about the housing crisis and taxes that drew the most attention. The controversy originated from an appearance on David Broncano’s La Revuelta, where she confessed that she owned four homes: one in Spain, another in Miami, and two more rented. «People have told me I’m a speculator because of what I said on the show,» the singer said in her latest interview. And she later defended herself by saying that «I was a younger person and didn’t really understand what the housing issue was about at the time. My bad! After that I was able to dive deeper into what was really going on».
Regarding this matter, and while aware that she speaks «from a position of privilege», Aitana wanted to send a blunt message to those who criticize her for this reason: «I don’t want this to continue. Certainly, I can say that I do not speculate with housing and I will never want to do so.» She also added that “there is one house I still have rented, but under conditions that have nothing to do with what is happening in the market today.”
Aitana and her taxes in Spain
Another matter she wanted to make very clear in her GQ interview is her residence in the United States. The performer of Superestrella bought this house in Miami to be able to work there and spend periods on the other side of the Atlantic, but she has insisted that she continues paying her taxes in Spain.
Aitana, on her latest visit to La Revuelta.
«They say that those who earn more should be fried with taxes.» And I completely agree, the artist stated bluntly. »I can assure you that half of my income goes to the Tax Office and I will never change that. You’ll never hear me complain about that. I understand I have a privilege in earning money from the things I do.«
And regarding other artists who relocate their tax residence to pay less taxes, Aitana made it very clear that «I’m not going to look for strategies to move to Andorra nor excuses to move to Miami. I don’t know if this will change in the future, but the truth is I am very happy in my country. Often, because I have stayed silent, a false image of me is created that isn’t real.»
A project in the style of Taylor Swift
«On a personal level, love overflows everywhere, but I want my new album to have everything. I want it to be fun, with a lot of sparkle,» confessed Aitana about her new project, which will follow the Cuarto Azul album. «It’s an artistic challenge that shouldn’t constrain your love life. There are also love songs that obviously evoke what I have with my partner, but then there are others that don’t».
Ambitious, the singer admitted she is already making demos for her next two albums. «I don’t want to compare myself to Taylor Swift, because they’ll kill me and I’m already feeling bad, but if you want to put it in ‘Swifties’ terms, the next one would be more of a Folklore, and then an Evermore,» she hinted, outlining an entirely new and ambitious creative universe to come.
