The Melanija Knavs, born in 1970 in the small industrial town of Sevnica, when her country was still part of socialist Yugoslavia, has come a long way to the White House. After starting her career as a model in Slovenia and moving to the United States, she met Trump at the Kit Kat Club in Manhattan in 1998. They married in 2005 and a year later they welcomed their only child together, Barron Trump.
Always discreet under the omnipresent shadow of her husband, Melania Trump is also capable of making headlines of her own. From her summit with 45 First Ladies to her recent appearance in the Capitol to urge Congress to pass laws in favor of youth in foster care, or her surprising press conference to deny that she had a relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. All this while continuing to shape a First Lady role that bears little resemblance to those of her predecessors in the office.
To begin with, Melania Trump hardly spends time in the White House, as she resides mainly between Florida and New York. And although she would like to work in the presidential mansion, she could not do so, since Donald Trump ordered the demolition of the East Wing to make room for a $300 million ballroom. This decision exemplifies the reduced and atypical role that the Slovenian has adopted during her husband’s second term. Rather than focusing primarily on addressing national or global issues or social causes, Melania has largely opted for personal privacy.
Since she assumed the role of First Lady in 2016, she has largely stayed on the sidelines of both the role itself and the traditional defense of the values of the office that exalted figures like Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama. As Sarah Trott states in The Conversation, Melania Trump wants the public to see her as a distinct entity from the president, with her own agenda and vision. This rejection of the position “offers the current First Lady the opportunity to forge her own public narrative rather than be defined by the press.”
Melania Trump and Her War with Anna Wintour
With this year’s release of her documentary on Amazon, which chronicles the twenty days leading up to her husband’s second inauguration, Melania Trump reminded us once again that the First Lady of the United States is both a cultural symbol and a political figure. In her case, her public image has largely rested on visual symbolic elements, such as fashion, her nonverbal language, and discretion. Something that has not prevented her from making enemies along the way, such as the powerful Anna Wintour.

The former Vogue editor continues to run the prestigious Met Gala with an iron fist. And although Melania and Donald Trump used to be among the guests, they have not attended since 2012. In fact, Wintour has confirmed that she will never invite Donald Trump to the most glamorous event of the year again. She has not said the same about Melania, but it does not seem that the two get along particularly well. It’s even claimed that the First Lady is very angry with her for not placing her on the cover of the magazine when her husband won the election.
The person who could seal the peace between them is Lauren Sanchez. The wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos will this year be the honorary president of the gala and could act as a mediator in the conflict. Lauren attended Donald Trump’s second inauguration, and it is evident that she has Wintour’s approval, who placed her on Vogue’s digital cover in June 2025 with her wedding dress. It remains to be seen whether Anna and Melania have any interest in signing a truce.
Melania, Epstein, and the Streisand Effect
Beyond whether or not she will attend the upcoming Met Gala, Melania Trump faces more pressing problems, such as ties to Epstein about which she herself has drawn attention. The Barbra Streisand effect is a phenomenon whereby attempts to censor information end up drawing even more attention to it. As Arwa Mahdawi stated in The Guardian, “that is what happens when you hold a surprise press conference to declare that you have had no relationship with a deceased sex offender and ask people to stop speculating about the matter. Which immediately causes people to start speculating about it.”
The First Lady decided to tell the world to ignore all the rumors circulating about her ties to Epstein because “she never had a relationship” with the deceased sex offender or with his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. “You don’t have to be a public relations expert to realize that issuing a statement like this was a deeply strange move,” Mahdawi added. “If the First Lady hoped to clear up some rumors and put the matter to rest, she has spectacularly failed.”
