How to Keep Your Skin Glowing During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a moment of big changes, also for the skin. Hormones, circulation and nutrition directly influence its appearance, which can range from a natural glow to the appearance of spots or breakouts. And although many experience it as a stage of doubts (what to eat, what exercise to do, what cosmetics to use…), the truth is that with an appropriate routine it is possible to maintain a glowing skin.

«Pregnancy does not have to be synonymous with neglecting self-care. It’s about choosing well, prioritizing safety, and enjoying healthy skin at such a special moment in life», explains the cosmetologist and creator of Byoode, Raquel González.

Hydration becomes the first essential step. Hormonal changes can dry out the skin and cause tightness, so it is advisable to opt for creams with humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. «Hormonal changes can alter the skin’s water levels, so it is essential to reinforce it with textures rich in humectant ingredients», recalls Patricia Garín, dermocosmetic director of Boutijour.

Sun protection is another non-negotiable, since during pregnancy the skin is more prone to developing cloasma or melasma. «Daily sun protection, accompanied by an antioxidant such as vitamin C, will be the best safeguard», insists Raquel González.

It is also important to know which ingredients to keep on hold. «During pregnancy it is advisable to avoid certain ingredients, not so much because they have been proven harmful, but because there are no specific studies in pregnant women. And, as a precaution, their use is discouraged», says Raquel González. Among them are retinoids, high-concentration exfoliating acids and essential oils, due to their penetration ability.

The good news is that safe and effective alternatives exist. «Bakuchiol is the plant-based alternative to retinol, completely safe during pregnancy and with long-term regenerative benefits», affirms Estefanía Nieto, dermocosmetic director at Medik8. To this is added vitamin C, which helps prevent spots and adds radiance, and niacinamide, a great ally for calming and balancing the skin.

In addition to topical care, cleansing plays an essential role. A gentle routine, with respectful cleansers and, at night, double cleansing, allows the skin to breathe better and absorb subsequent treatments. And, although it seems obvious, good sleep and a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables are also key to boost the natural glow from within.
