Goodbye to Black: Brown Masks Trending This Fall

The black mascara was, until recently, one of those makeup products whose color I never considered changing. But this autumn browns have stopped seeming to me an option reserved for the most natural-looking makeup. Chocolate, espresso, or mocha allow you to define the lashes and maintain substantial intensity, but with a warmer finish and less starkness than black.

The interesting thing is that brown doesn’t necessarily mean makeup that’s barely perceptible. A very dark espresso can come quite close to the definition we’re looking for with a black mascara, while chocolate adds warmth and medium browns soften the result even more. Therefore, before choosing, I would look as much at the depth of the shade as at the effect the mascara promises: volume, length, curl or a combination of several.

We can also play with intensity without needing to change products. A single coat works especially well if we want defined lashes for the day, while adding more allows building volume and achieving a more pronounced result. If you like the black mascara and fear that brown might fall short, I would start with an espresso or a deep chocolate and save mocha and softer browns for discreet makeup looks.

So, rather than bidding farewell to the black mascara for good, this autumn I prefer to have an alternative. Black remains my choice when I want maximum intensity; brown comes into play when I’m looking for definition without hardening the gaze too much. And there’s what I like most about this trend: changing a seemingly small detail can substantially modify the makeup result without having to learn any new technique.

Size Up by Sephora Collection.

Size Up by Sephora Collection, in brown, is an alternative to black when we want to define the lashes in a somewhat softer way. Its hourglass-shaped brush combines fibers of different lengths to provide volume, length and curl. The color allows maintaining substantial intensity in the gaze, but with a result less stark than a black mascara.

Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced.

Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced, in chocolate, brings its well-known formula to a deep warm brown. Its hourglass-shaped brush works the lashes to provide volume, length and definition, while the polymers help to maintain the curl. The formula also includes peptides to condition the lashes during use.

Perfect Strokes by Rare Beauty.

Perfect Strokes by Rare Beauty, in Universal Brown, allows you to define the lashes with a brown tone softer than classic black. The lightweight formula can be layered to achieve more volume, while the bristles of different lengths help lift, lengthen, and curl. It also includes castor oil to keep the lashes soft and avoid a too-rigid feel.

Master Mascara by Makeup by Mario.

Master Mascara by Makeup by Mario, in The Perfect Brown, bets on a brown that works especially well when we seek definition without overly hardening the gaze. Its brush distributes the product evenly and allows you to modulate volume simply by adding layers. The formula is long-wearing and designed to resist sweat and humidity.

Eye Want You by Westman Atelier.

Eye Want You by Westman Atelier, in Le Brun, uses an elegant brown to lengthen, define and add volume to the lashes. Its formula combines plant waxes from carnauba and candelilla with shea butter to achieve a creamy, easy-to-work texture. We can apply a few coats for a discreet effect or push for a considerably more defined look.

The Color Mascara by 3INA.

The Color Mascara by 3INA, in shade 575, introduces color to the lashes with a formula of intense pigmentation and buildable effect. Its silicone wand glides along each lash from root to tip to distribute the tone evenly, while curling and adding volume. It also includes plant keratin.

Tubing Mascara by Uklash.

Tubing Mascara by Uklash, in Mocha, combines an easy-to-wear brown with technology that coats each lash individually. It aims to add length, definition, and volume while limiting smudging around the eyes. Its other feature is removal: the tiny tubes can be washed away with warm water, avoiding excessive rubbing of the lashes.

Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara by Fenty Beauty.

Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara by Fenty Beauty, in the shade Let′s Be Blunt, brown, provides volume and definition with a long-wear creamy formula. Its slim brush is designed to coat the lashes and achieve a dense look without feeling too heavy. It also resists sweat, humidity, and transfer.
