I still remember, as a child, coming out of the shower with damp hair and brushing from the roots to the ends as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Besides pulling all the knots downward and ending up pulling out much more than I should, I didn’t pay much attention to the fact that my hair was curly. Later dried it without any technique and the result was always the same: frizz and a lot of volume, exactly what I didn’t want.
Over the years I have understood that detangling well has more to do with the technique than with making lots of passes. Instead of starting at the top, now I start at the ends and gradually work my way up toward the root. This avoids accumulating knots at the ends and having to exert more force to undo them. If I find one especially tricky, I prefer to work on it little by little rather than insist with the brush.
The type of brush also matters a lot more than it seems. For detangling I look for flexible bristles that yield when they meet resistance, especially if I’m going to use it with wet hair. In my case there’s another important factor: curly hair, so brushing it indiscriminately dry separates the strands, breaks the curl shape, and promotes frizz.
Switching brushes about a month ago made me notice how much the tool matters as much as the technique. Now I work in sections, always starting from the ends and letting the bristles yield to knots instead of insisting until they come undone. It may seem like a small change, but I notice it every time I finish styling: fewer tugs and, above all, many fewer hairs broken between the bristles.
Magic Brush by Les Secrets de Loly.
Magic Brush by Les Secrets de Loly is designed to detangle hair even in the shower, reducing tension on the fiber. Its eight rows of flexible bristles adapt to the movement of the hair and allow knots to be worked out gently. Additionally, the space between the bristles can be adjusted according to the hair texture, making it especially effective on curly manes.
Leonor Greyl Scalp Care Brush
Leonor Greyl Scalp Care Brush relies on traditional boar bristles, placed so they can glide through the hair without subjecting it to excessive tension. It includes a natural rubber pad and is designed to smooth the fiber, add shine, and reduce static during brushing. It is made in France following the tradition of artisanal brush-making.
Eolux Anti-Frizz Brush
Eolux Anti-Frizz Brush combines flexible and boar bristles to detangle while helping to distribute pressure along the hair. Its spiral structure also promotes airflow during drying, speeding up this step of the routine. The bristles are intended to add shine and handle the hair gently, and it can be used on different hair lengths.
Moroccanoil Flat Brush
Moroccanoil Flat Brush is designed for both drying and giving the hair its final finish. Its ionic properties promote an even distribution of heat and help achieve a shinier mane. It is suitable for different lengths and hair types and includes a hidden separator tip in the handle, very practical for dividing the mane into sections.
The Dresser by GHD
The Dresser by GHD is an oval brush with anti-static nylon bristles that penetrate the mane to work the hair from the roots. In addition to detangling, it helps control static electricity and distributes the natural oils along the hair. It is especially interesting for achieving a more polished and shiny finish after brushing.
