The Spanish Island You Can Explore on Foot, Where It’s Always Summer

From Caleta de Sebo you can head south along the coast. First comes El Salado; then La Francesa, one of those beaches you’re glad you packed a swimsuit for; and a little further on La Cocina, sheltered under Montaña Amarilla. The full circular route is 12.5 kilometers, although you can also approach it as a sequence of stops and return when your legs decide. La Cocina requires about an hour and a half on foot from the town. Reaching a beach on foot still has far more charm than finding parking twenty meters from the sand.

The north has a different character. Las Conchas lies facing Montaña Clara and Alegranza, with Montaña Bermeja right behind and an Atlantic that here deserves respect: currents and waves can be strong. It is a beach to look at the conditions before diving into the water, no matter how irresistible it may seem. Nearby are La Lambra and the basalt arches of Los Caletones, another reminder that La Graciosa forms part of a volcanic territory that is best traversed without leaving the marked paths.

Between both ends appears Pedro Barba, the island’s second residential nucleus, about six kilometers from Caleta de Sebo. Its roughly twenty houses are mainly occupied during the summer and form a small white cluster facing the sea, with gardens and a tiny beach.

Caleta de Sebo concentrates daily life. It is wise to reserve part of the day to stay there without a schedule: watch the boats return, eat fish, walk along the harbor or sit in front of the Risco de Famara. The historic relationship of the Graciosans with fishing remains a core part of the local identity, even though tourism today carries an evident weight.
