The Sock Revolution: Runways Prove Socks Are Autumn’s Must-Have Accessory

The Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week have just confirmed to us what is the trend accessory that will dominate the upcoming fall-winter season. You know, these two essential dates for the fashion industry are key in shaping trends that will be central over the coming months. And, intriguingly, both the Italian and French cities have shared a common denominator that has already been dubbed sock styling.

And it is nothing else but a trend that turns a previously invisible garment into a gesture of absolute personality. Both streets and runways have shown how to revive a sock and make it the protagonist of these upcoming outfits. And, believe it or not, it is a small piece that the fashion insiders have even paired with high-heeled shoes.

This fall-winter, it seems that socks are becoming the base of any outfit, leaving aside their purely functional role. They are no longer worn only with sneakers and loafers, but they also position themselves as that ally to make your sandals and high-heeled shoes much more comfortable.

In fact, many looks have appeared that incorporate this garment easily into results that are among the most elegant you can wear for a special occasion. It has been fashion influencers who have turned the sock into a benchmark in current fashion trends.

Some prefer a knee-high style option that sits below the knee in a fine version to achieve a more neutral and formal result. Others use this piece to add a splash of color. And in both Paris and Milan we have seen options ranging from gray and black to bolder ones such as blue and red.

That said, all of them were inspired by proposals from brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Fenid, MaxMara, Marni, or Tod’s. These have been some of the leading labels that, in these editions of the fashion weeks, have bet on the sock as part of their new collection.

And, although the easy way is to add it to a flat shoe, these luxury houses have shown that the sock also has a place in elegant footwear. We have seen this approach with dresses, midi skirts, and spectacular pieces that reimagine a simple accessory intended to accommodate the footwear and keep it warmer.

Neutral tones are the most chosen and the safe bet is to pick the same color for the sock as for the footwear. The goal is to achieve a boot or ankle-boot look with much more continuity and a more flattering effect. If you find it tricky, you should know that this is a trend that has already transcended and has reached the streets.

Calzedonia’s latest socks.

And all thanks to brands like Calzedonia, which has responded with a cotton proposal that combines the trend of visible layers with the comfort required by the seasonal change. The proposal plays with the same logic that trends on Instagram, presenting the sock as an accessory, not just another garment. Colors that contrast with the look, lengths peeking above the ankle, with edging, without cuffs… a selection as ideal as it is complete to elevate your look.
