There is a moment of the year when fresh perfumes stop appealing to me. During the hot months I search for exactly the opposite: citrusy, clean scents and fragrances that barely sit on the skin. But as soon as the temperatures dip a little, I start wanting fragrances with more intensity that are more noticeable.
I’m not necessarily talking about heavy or overly sweet scents. What I’m looking for now are perfumes with personality, the kind that evolve over the hours and leave a recognizable trail. Creamy woods, vanilla less obvious, amber, musks, spices or flowers with a bit more depth gradually replace everything that during the summer smelled clean, citrusy or freshly showered.
And probably that is one of the things I like most about the seasonal switch. Just as jackets return, closed-toe shoes or darker tones come back to the wardrobe, the way I want to smell also changes. Here are some of the perfumes I would go back to this autumn when I’m looking for precisely that: a characterful scent, but easy to wear.
