The health of Curro Romero is once again a matter of concern for his family, friends and the numerous followers of the legendary bullfighter. At ninety-two years old, the Pharaoh of Camas is admitted to the Macarena Hospital in Seville after suffering a new bout of pneumonia. This same illness had already forced his hospitalization last April.

According to sources close to his family, Curro Romero’s health status is at present satisfactory. The torero is calm, in a good mood and he would have even had lunch without incident. Therefore, it is not ruled out that, if his evolution continues along this path, he could be discharged in the coming days and return to his home.

Despite his advanced age, the torero continues to display a great physical strength that has allowed him to overcome a series of serious health problems. In April he was admitted for another bout of pneumonia, more serious than this time, caused by his difficulties swallowing. On that occasion it was also accompanied by a COVID diagnosis.

These medical setbacks came on top of the urinary infection and the respiratory crisis for which he was admitted two more times at the Seville clinic in May 2025. Just a year earlier, Curro Romero had suffered the fracture of the femoral head, for which he had to be operated on again at the Macarena Hospital.

Curro Romero and His Battle with Cancer

In April 2020, during the pandemic, Curro Romero faced his most challenging task. It was then that he overcame laryngeal cancer that marked a turning point in his physical state. It was his wife, Carmen Tello, who revealed the news in statements to the EFE Agency, confirming that the disease had “disappeared completely”.

«In December they had already removed a bad tumor that had appeared on his right vocal cord. After Epiphany we went to have the review of that malignant nodule; everything was going perfectly, but Dr. Esteban found something new», detailed at the time Carmen Tello, before thanking the work of the medical team at the Santa Ángela de la Cruz Hospital in Seville.

It was then that they detected that new tumor from which Curro Romero recovered at home during the lockdown. Thus, the Pharaoh of Camas, who was 86 at the time, managed to preserve his speech and overcome the illness without needing to be hospitalized during the worst phase of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus.

Carmen Tello, His Great Support

Both in this latest health scare and in his previous medical problems, the bullfighter’s wife has been his main support. In the 1990s, Curro Romero staged his last professional renaissance and became one of the most iconic figures in Seville’s social scene, especially following his marriage to the aristocrat.

Carmen Tello and Curro Romero married in 2022 at the Casa de Pilatos in Seville after 28 years of romantic relationship. The couple had not been able to receive ecclesiastical blessing because the torero did not have the annulment of his marriage to Concha Márquez Piquer, his first wife. With the death of the artist, their religious union could finally be celebrated. The godparents of the ceremony were María Romero, who accompanied her brother to the altar, and Javier Tello, Carmen’s brother.
