With the passing of time, the skin loses firmness, elasticity and that natural glow that used to reflect light easily. At this stage, choosing the right texture of the highlighter makes the difference between a luminous finish and one that accentuates expression lines. And here, texture is everything.
Cream highlighters blend with the skin and provide a satin glow, without leaving an artificial effect. Their flexible texture allows diffusing easily with fingers or a sponge, achieving a fresh and flattering finish even on dry or dehydrated skin. In addition, many formulas include ingredients such as lightweight oils or hyaluronic acid, which keep the skin hydrated and comfortable throughout the day.
As explained by Kuki Giménez, director of Let’s Make Up School and spokesperson for Druni, “for mature skin the best highlighters are liquids or creams because they are more moisturizing and do not cake the skin nor stay deposited in the wrinkle as happens with those that are in powder.” In other words: light and juicy formulas are the best allies to restore the face’s natural light without highlighting texture.
Before venturing into the glow, it’s worth knowing the different formats. Giménez classifies them into three: “Liquids are ideal for all skin types.” They don’t crease and adapt very well. They can be applied with the fingers, with a brush or with a sponge. That said, you have to be careful because, being liquids, they can spread quickly. They can also be mixed even with moisturizer if you don’t want to use makeup base.
Powder highlighters, on the other hand, are “the most popular due to their high pigment concentration and because many of them can be applied on the eyelids. There is always to apply them with a brush and blend very well to integrate them with the skin until it looks natural. They are recommended for young skin.”
Finally, cream highlighters — the experts’ favorites for mature skin — “are phenomenal for adapting to the skin by heating the product and applying it with the fingers. You should avoid oily areas,” concludes Giménez.
