What Skincare Experts Say About Skip-Care and Why Skincare Matters

To be honest, I too fell into that endless skincare routine in which there were several cleansers, toners, essences, serums, creams, oils… I had internalized that many products were synonymous with brighter skin, when the reality is quite different. In fact, we have reached a point where we all know (more clearly than ever) that less is more. And that’s why skip-care has gained more prominence.

This trend speaks to the essence of skinimalism, that is, using few cosmetics, and although it may sound paradoxical, this movement has gained ground even in Korea. «We have never needed ten-step routines or daily deep cleanses. The excess of products usually leads to irritations from saturation, or to taut and dull skin«, explains Pedro Catalá, PhD in Pharmacy and cosmetologist. It can even achieve just the opposite, since «for example, an excess of antioxidants can be counterproductive, turning them into prooxidants and achieving the opposite of the desired effect«.

So, what does skip-care really consist of? In better selection. «Skip-care is about simplifying and the goal is to achieve with fewer steps (but with better products) results superior to those previously sought with endless routines». In practice, the expert proposes four pillars that range from a mildly acidic cleanser, around a pH 5; to a serum that covers our skin’s needs; a complete moisturizer that provides comfort and helps reinforce the hydrolipidic film; and sunscreen.

Personally, what I like most about this movement is that it forces us to pay attention to our dermis. Skincare should be personalized and changing depending on the moment, the city, or the season in which we find ourselves. In fact, as Catalá warns, «it is essential to move away from viral trends to listen to what the skin really demands at each stage of life».
