The Unexpected Short-Sleeve Knit Top Elevates Fall Outfits

There are a few weeks of the year when dressing becomes particularly tricky. In the morning it starts to cool down, by noon it is still hot, and pulling the thick sweaters out of the closet seems premature. It is precisely in that intermediate zone where a garment that until recently could have seemed difficult to fit in starts to make perfect sense: the short-sleeve sweater.

This season, knitwear also adapts to the in-between weather. Against the traditional long-sleeve sweater, designs appear that practically adopt the silhouette of a T-shirt, but replace cotton with fine wool, merino, cashmere or knit blends that are much more appealing when autumn begins.

The autumnal substitute for the basic T-shirt

A crew-neck model and fine knit works with straight jeans and ballet flats, with pleated trousers and loafers, or even tucked slightly into a midi skirt. The result remains simple, but the texture of the knit makes the outfit look immediately more appropriate for the new season.

Designs in gray, beige, chocolate, navy blue or burgundy are especially easy to mix because they allow you to start introducing the autumn palette without needing to completely overhaul the wardrobe yet.

There is also an important difference in silhouette. Compared to the summer tee, normally lighter and more relaxed, the short-sleeve sweater provides a bit more structure, especially when it features slightly roomy sleeves, defined shoulders or a knit with some body.

With tailored trousers is probably where it works best

One of the easiest combinations to wear it now is with tailored trousers. The blend of knit and a wide or pleated trouser achieves that balance between casual and polished that works especially well in between seasons.

With ballet flats or minimalist sneakers it can become a daily uniform. With loafers or low-heeled shoes, on the other hand, it works perfectly for the office.
