The 2026 Emmys have highlighted some makeup trends that we will likely see repeated in the coming months. On the red carpet there were luminous complexions, fairly visible blush, lips with greater prominence, and, overall, a much less heavy approach to evening makeup. The result remained sophisticated, but without the need for every product applied to the face to be conspicuous.
And, precisely among the Emmy glam looks, there was one detail that repeated more than it seemed. While some red lips, hair changes, or gowns managed to attract all the attention, the eyes went in the exact opposite direction.
Just zoom in on some of the night’s close-ups to see it. Eye shadows have lost intensity to become virtually imperceptible. No big smoky eyes, no multi-color gradients, and no heavily defined lids. In many cases, the first impression is even that they are not wearing any shadow.
Almost Imperceptible Eye Shadows Are Trending
It’s not exactly about having stopped using shadows. In fact, behind some of these looks there are palettes and products carefully chosen. The difference lies in the amount, in the tones, and, above all, in the intention.
Now shadows are used to provide minimal depth, to slightly even out the eyelid, or to add a touch of brightness. Beiges, light browns, pinks, and tones close to the natural skin color replace the colors that a few years ago would have built the makeup entirely.
One of the actresses who has best embraced this trend is Cailee Spaeny. The actress paired her red Miu Miu dress with a crimson lipstick that was practically identical, letting all attention fall on the mouth and reducing eye makeup to the minimum.
By keeping the rest of the face much cleaner, the red tone gained even more impact. There was no need to add a smoky effect or a particularly bold shadow to complete the look. On the contrary, much subtler eyes managed to balance the ensemble and give it a more contemporary finish.
Natural Eye Makeup Also Requires Work
That the shadows are barely perceptible does not mean the makeup is easier. Achieving that almost bare eyelid effect also requires working the eye, only in a much more subtle way.
Instead of defining the crease too much, tones very close to the natural skin color are used. The shadow is applied in small amounts and blended until the edges almost disappear. Satin and luminous finishes are also gaining ground over the more intense metallics.

A similar shift also happens with the lashes. In several of the Emmy makeup looks, the aim was to define the gaze without letting them dominate the face. The result is lighter, less constructed eyes, in line with that natural look that repeated throughout the night.
The Spotlight Moves from Eyes to Skin and Lips
For years, nighttime makeup seemed built around the eyes. Smoky shadows, eyeliner, multiple shadows to create depth, and voluminous lashes were almost automatically part of any red-carpet look.
Now the focus shifts. Blush, the skin’s luminosity, and the lips gain importance, while the eyes become much more understated.

At the Emmys, we saw precisely pink cheeks, luminous skin, and lips ranging from nude tones to deep reds. That balance between a refined complexion and much softer eyes also makes the result look fresher and less heavy.
