Don’t Do This With Your Concealer: The Trick to Brightening Your Eyes

Until recently I thought it wasn’t necessary to use concealer, but my friend Ali is one of its staunchest advocates. For her it’s indispensable, and so insistent is she that I have started to notice the differences that using it makes, even if what you’re aiming for is quick five-minute makeup.

Concealers conceal dark circles, imperfections such as pimples or spots, and help bring more brightness to the face. Now, one thing we’ve learned is that tone makes a difference, and also the way you apply it. Far from what many of us believed we had learned, makeup artists’ advice is to opt for the shade that matches your skin tone most closely. The reason? When you choose a concealer that is too light, the result is very superficial.

Once you overcome this error, the technique is fundamental. The clean look had taught us to apply a bit at the tear duct and at the outer corner of the eye to create a cropped effect. But now, after Hailey Bieber has confessed what her tip is for a more awake look, we have gone further (and we can’t talk about anything else).

The makeup trick you need

The content creator Sylvia Ruiz talks about it in one of her TikTok videos. «It’s very simple, it basically consists of applying highlighter to the under-eye area because they say that this will make your gaze look more open. I’m interested in testing that.» In the video she applies a touch of tinted sunscreen and applies a Charlotte Tilbury highlighter. «For me they’re the best. With Flawless there is practically no coverage, there are no particles. I’ve seen many people use this.»

But why highlighter? As she explains, «the theory says it creates a mirror-like effect that, by bouncing light, brightens the gaze». Then she applies a little concealer (Prisme de Givenchy) near the tear trough and at the outer corner of the eye; and seals them with a bit of loose powder.

After finishing her makeup, the result is more than evident: «the look appears more awake and I find this quite interesting. Now I don’t think it’s the trick that changes your gaze, but I’ll probably have it done again».

Hollywood Flawless Filter by Charlotte Tilbury. As the content creator explains, it’s hard to classify it as a primer, highlighter, or skin-perfecter. Its lightweight texture provides a luminous, diffused glow that helps soften texture and achieve that juicy-skin effect.
