As in every year, the island of Mallorca will for a few weeks between July and August be the epicenter of the summer for our Royal Family. There we will see the kings Felipe and Letizia together with Leonor and Sofia alternating among key institutional commitments, sporting traditions, and spontaneous outings around Palma. With Marivent Palace as the headquarters, the official portrait will not be missing, which in recent years has moved to other enclaves such as the Valldemossa Charterhouse or the Alfabia Gardens.
Queen Letizia has delayed her official arrival in Mallorca due to attending last Friday the 50th anniversary of the Adolfo Domínguez fashion house in Ourense. So the ahead-of-arrival to Mallorca was Felipe VI, who kicked off his official schedule with audiences with the island authorities, led by the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens. The meetings took place at the recently renovated Royal Palace of la Almudaina, which will reopen to the public on July 29.
This will not be the only audience of King Felipe during his stay in Mallorca. On July 29 there will be the traditional summer audience with the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. And on August 4, the turn will come for the reception to Balearic civil society, one of the most attended events of the Royal Household during its stay on the island. An event that brings together institutional and professional representatives from various sectors and that symbolizes the close relationship of our Royal Family with Mallorca.
Meanwhile, Queen Letizia will not have her first official act on the island until Sunday, August 2. It will then be when she reveals her most cinephile side to close yet another year of the Atlàntida Film Fest. This festival was born 16 years ago as the first online film festival in our country and it did so with a mission: to bring to the public the best international films that could not find a place in cinemas.
Felipe VI and His Double Trip to South America
From Mallorca, the monarch will be forced to pack his bags twice to undertake two transoceanic trips to South America. The first of these will be this very Monday, when he will travel to Peru to represent Spain at the swearing-in of the new president of the Andean country, Keiko Fujimori. The presence of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the president of the Partido Popular, has also been confirmed at this ceremony.
His second express trip will take place for the same reason, but on this occasion the destination will be Colombia. Felipe VI will be the one to represent Spain at the swearing-in of the new president of the country, Abelardo de la Espriella. To fulfill this diplomatic commitment, the monarch will modify his official schedule and postpone his participation in the sailing championships bearing his name, where he will debut the sailing vessel Hispania.

King Felipe VI traditionally competes each summer at the helm in the MAPFRE King’s Cup of Sailing in Mallorca, one of the Mediterranean’s most prestigious nautical events. It will be on August 8 when he brings the competition to a close, presiding over the traditional trophy presentation. As a curiosity, the monarch first competed in this regatta in 1984, when he was only 16 years old.
A Family Summer at Marivent
Before King Felipe’s arrival on the island, Queen Sofia was already at Marivent Palace with her daughter, Infanta Cristina. In a summer marked for the emerita by the memory of her sister Irene of Greece and her cousin Tatiana Radziwill, it will be especially important to be surrounded by the affection of her children and grandchildren, who will visit her there over the coming weeks.

The first to arrive will be Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, who face welcoming days of rest after finishing the first stage of their military training and the second, their first year of studies in Lisbon. By the end of the summer, it will also be the turn for the heir to the throne to begin her university journey with a degree in Political Science that she will study at Carlos III University in Madrid. As for her younger sister, she will head to Paris to continue with her degree in Political Science and International Relations at Forward College.
