Pro Makeup Artist Tips for Applying Bronzer on Mature Skin

Changes in Mature Skin and How to Apply Makeup

With the arrival of menopause, changes in the skin also change the way we apply makeup. “Fundamentally mature skin tends to be drier, so you have to use textures that are more moisturizing, creamier.” It also appears, of course, lines or fine wrinkles, explains Roberto Siguero, National Make Up Artist for Lancôme in Spain. In this context, he notes that many traditional powder bronzers may not be the most suitable, since “the skin is drier” and this can make wrinkles more noticeable.

The formulation of these products has changed and this is very beneficial for mature skin. “The latest bronzers we have launched are bronzers with a powder-creme texture and also in a matte finish. A thing that wonderfully benefits mature skin,” explains the makeup artist. He also adds an important key: “anything with a shiny or iridescent finish accentuates a wrinkle or expression lines, so the fact that it is matte suits us very well.”

Effects of Bronzer

What do we look for with bronzers on mature skin? For Roberto Siguero it would be “to give a sun-kissed look without having sunburned or to help us maintain that natural tan for longer.” This healthy-looking glow becomes especially relevant on aging skin, where the tone can become duller or irregular and we need to revive the radiance of the face.

In this vein, the makeup artist Pilar Vilas points out that bronzer serves to “give warmth and dimension to the face, especially after unifying with a foundation or BB cream.” She adds that it helps to “restore volumes and basically simulate that we have gotten sun.” Unlike contouring, she stresses, “the bronzer is warmer and not gray,” so its application focuses on areas where the sun would naturally strike.

Application for a Natural Look

How we apply our bronzer will make the difference in the results. Roberto Siguero bets on a simple but effective method. “Normally what I do is apply a foundation makeup in the same skin tone and then draw on the face a three.” This gesture allows some areas to stay in their natural tone and others with a bronzed effect, achieving a more realistic finish. The expert explains that he starts “on the forehead, goes along the temple, down to the cheekbone and then back toward the hairline near the ear and the jaw,” he details. This movement in the shape of a “three” is repeated on both sides of the face and, well blended, achieves a balanced and flattering result.

For her part, Vilas insists on the importance of placement: the bronzer should be applied at “the high points of the face, where the sun would normally hit,” such as the high part of the cheekbone, the bridge of the nose or the top of the forehead. She also recommends extending it to “the neck just below the chin” to unify the whole. The makeup artist emphasizes the importance of combining products. “Personally I like to pair it with blush to add extra dimension and to resemble each person’s natural tan.” This mix helps to restore the warm, healthy tone to the face that is lost with time.

Mistakes to Avoid

Bronzer is a product with which it is easy to make mistakes when applying makeup. Siguero states that “what we must avoid are shiny or iridescent finishes” since they accentuate wrinkles and expression lines. Regarding application, he recalls that “it is normally applied with a brush so that it blends well and the result is completely natural,” although he acknowledges that there are cream or stick formats.

Vilas, for her part, warns about excess. “Overusing bronzer tends to accentuate blemishes,” one of the most common concerns on mature skin. She also notes the importance of choosing the right shade because “using a shade too orange for our complexion” can be unflattering, so she recommends adapting the hue to the skin tone. For Pilar Vilas it is also important to prioritize “luminosity and color over bronzing.” In other words, it’s not about darkening the face, but about returning life and freshness. Finally, the makeup artist suggests applying the product “in dabs” if spots have been corrected beforehand, to avoid disturbing the base makeup.
